FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you need planning permission to build an outdoor horse arena?

Planning permission is usually required for outdoor arenas when:

  • You're making changes to land of a significant scale, which outdoor arenas usually constitute
  • The arena is considered 'operational development' under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990
  • Arenas are built on agricultural land
  • Your local planning authority has regulations regarding the building of invasive structures
What is the best base for an outdoor horse arena?

For an outdoor horse arena, crushed rock or construction aggregate is incredibly effective at draining water. It also will compact well if the mixture is well-graded

How big does an outdoor horse arena need to be?

A standard outdoor arena should be suited to your horse and ensure it's able to accommodate a full range of training and exercises, so a standard outdoor arena tends to be around 100x200 ft (this is common in competition or national events). Large arenas can be about 150x300 ft.

Does an outdoor horse arena need to be level?

All horse arenas should be level. Uneven footing can lead to tripping and injuries for both horse and rider, which can impact performance and safety. Continued use of an arena without levelling will result in surface compaction and can damage the surface and equipment during training.
