    AMERICAN BARNS

DESIGN AND BUILD OF AMERICAN BARNS

We Create Fantastic American Barns
American Barns offer a practical, spacious solution for housing horses, designed at any size to create a relaxed, sociable, and airy environment. The generous headroom improves airflow and adds to the overall comfort of the space.

Unlike traditional stable yards, American barns house everything under one roof, from loose boxes and tack rooms to hay and bedding storage, keeping horses and equipment protected from all weather conditions. Many horses thrive in this style of build, enjoying a greater sense of herd connection over isolation.

We offer a wide choice of construction materials, including steel, brick, stone, or timber, with a range of roof types that can incorporate light panels for natural illumination. All materials meet planning requirements. Internal stables come in various styles and sizes, and optional rear top doors can enhance both ventilation and views for your horses.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you need planning permission to build an American barn?

For the construction of an American barn, you will tend to need planning permission, as these are typically large structures that are built to be permanent. You should contact your local authority, especially if the build involves a change of use from agricultural to equestrian purposes.

What type of flooring should an American barn have?

There are various flooring types to choose from when building an American barn, and naturally we can advise on the best fit for your needs. Porous asphalt can be preferred, allowing water and urine to drain through it, into a layer of stone, and into the soil below. Rubber matting over a sloped permeable base is also a good idea: concrete, pavers, and specialised drainers can help with this. A liberal layer of absorbent bedding like sand or limestone.

How much is an American barn?

As you might imagine, an American barn is no small investment. But it is an investment nonetheless, and can cost up to tens of thousands of pounds. Of course, the specific cost will depend on many factors and we can advise on the best direction for your barn based on your requirements and budget, the land you're building on, and personal preferences. Wood horse barns will cost a variable amount depending on the wood used and how it's sourced, and a barn that uses metal predominantly will also need special planning, so we will liaise with you if you have a preference, or we can offer advice.

How big does an American barn need to be?

Speaking generally, 36 ft is a common width for an American barn for horses, with around 10 ft for height, and the length dependent on the number of stalls you need, additional rooms for storage and equipment. The great thing about building bespoke American barns is that we can evaluate the land you want to build on and devise a plan for the best barn size for your site.
